Synopsis: The Karate Kid for Ballet Fanatics
Review: What's that I hear you say? Liam saw a ballet film? You know what? I did, and it was damn awesome. This film is based on the book by the same name and beauifully portrays the story of Li Cunxin, a young Chinese boy selected by the Communist Chinese regime to take part in the nation's ballet program. Li is mentored by my favourite character in the movie 'Teacher Chan' who teaches him the value of hard work and never giving up. Li is eventually selected to do a placement in the American Ballet Institute where he excels in dancing but struggles with the acute consumerism of Western culture and the elicit lure of American women. The story is told through Li's current experience in the American Ballet Institute and a series of flashbacks to his childhood and the hardships endured as part of his selection and training under the Chinese Communist Ballet Regime. This film is lovely to watch, it has mad-wicked dancing, funny Coummnism-isms and a generally meaningful message of overcoming adversity about it. Although there are no big-name actors the characters do generally shine, and draw you into the story. My one criticism of this flick would be that the main character is ridiculously ripped and makes all other men look bad (except for Browny). If you have body issues, best go with a supportive friend/man-date to hold you when the tears are just too much. I implore you to put down all pre-conceived notions about this supposedly 'art-house' flick and go and see it with an open mind. You will not be disappointed.
